This is soooo helpful, Shawn - I was watching Pete Thorn’s live video Sunday and asked him whether he was using his ears or theory to develop his demo songs and his response was super helpful. Good stuff. I learned to think in terms of playing melodies over chord changes rather than playing scales/patterns over chord progressions, if that makes sense.

That's similar to how I practice/play my own stuff. Use basic theory and noodle with chord voicings. When I finish a riff or part then it's a lot of "Does this sound good & what notes are involved in this lick?" I play it, probably re-write it & break it down once I like it.

I’m right there with the demo-itis. Worse yet , I find I can’t I’ve on until I’ve recorded it. BTW, loving the Northern mauler I won from you guys at Christmas. So many tones even though I rarely tune less than drop D!

Ive got a 64 ES 335 Reissue from 2020 and its a great playing and sounding guitar. Reason for me to get it was it being versatile and jazzy and the beautiful cherry red which is just so classy. total eye catcher. im really curious to try a Collings thanks to Julian Lage who is just incredible. My former guitar teacher highly recommended me a Collings over Gibson as well and they seem superb in craftmanship.

Nice lick. Basically you are going from A mixolydian to A altered (G# melodic minor) and back, but you’re right in that you don’t need to know that. The altered scale has both the b5 and #5 in it. Part of the lick could also be in A Lydian dominant (E melodic minor). That also has the b5 but not the #5 (or b6). However you organize it, awareness of the intervals is key.
